Eden Valley...Summer Festival...!!! 2013

Edenbridge summer festival got underway with a beautiful summers day and blue skies, and plenty to enjoy as the start of the famous towns Pram Race got ready under starters orders at the Leisure centre.

There was a good selection of prams and home made vehicles that made this event into another year of fun and pleasure for those taking part and those who lined the streets to see them - Go!

They came out of the path, across the traffic lights towards the High Street to shouts of joy, whistles and encouragement that were heard from spectators all along the route, to the first stop, then as a rush to the finishing line at The Star Inn.

While this was in progress at Bradford’s Electrical, John Surtees was displaying two great formula 1 race cars, and to the deafening noise for all those that flocked to see him and his superb display, his old MV Augusta, a 500cc, 4 cylinder from his 1960 championship wins, alongside was a race BMW, both were being revved-up, both bikes creating a deafening noise...but the sound of nostalgia as the MV, which was used by John during his famous legendary memories as the only man to win – The World Championship – on two and four wheels ...sounded spectacular!

In the town there were many stalls on display with art, crafts and food. The - Eden Valley Artists - had a display and created a mural of scenes from, Alice in Wonderland. There was a great fancy dress competition outside Boots the chemist, as the Town Band gave as always, renditions from their most favourite music, and played exceptionally well!

As well as the Marlings Morris Dancers who all gave a superb display of the old English favourites dances, which everyone enjoyed watching and listening to.

Later in The Square, in the Bonfire Society mobile display van Laura Mendes, assistant during this summer festival, announced the winners of the junior and senior Pram Race winners. Soon to be on stage was a terrific young band with a young female vocalist and four exceptionally talented musicians who gave an superb performance of their brilliant talents, singing and playing some covers and their own original music.

In the recreation ground in Lingfield Road, the wonderful selection of vintage cars, motorcycles and scooters, that left Fircroft way earlier assembled for a static display, dozens on dozens of people flocked to see these wonderful expensive and lovingly cared for vehicles were there, for everyone to get “close – up” to and enjoy...some costing many thousands of pounds to restore.

Across in the next field a superb model aircraft display was in progress by the - Croydon Model Aircraft Club - and was unbelievable to watch, many were there to see the aerobatic display of these tiny planes, dive, twist, turn and spiral earthwards under the complete control of the Model Club...superb handlers...Great and an exceptional model display..Fantastic!!!

Lastly to finish the day was a free entry to join in and dance the evening away with the superb jazz funk band in the recreation ground – Protect the Beat – this was a fantastic show, and everyone said it was fantastic!!!

It certainly was a great boost for the town, but there is much more to see and visit in the next two weeks, log – on to
