Annie Souls must have without doubt been devastated at the loss of her youngest son, and time would not allow her to dwell in tears of great and utter grief, sadness and despair, for all too soon the second telegram arrived with the more shocking news, and the loss of her next son.

Private 21686, Frederick George Souls…Aged 30…of the 16th Cheshire Regiment was killed in action on 19th July 1916, his body was never found.
He is commemorated on the Memorial to the missing at Thiepval |

These two tragedies alone was enough for any mother to bear, but more was to come than anyone could imagine for Annie Souls, not only had she had to endure the loss of two of her precious sons, when the third telegram arrived less than two weeks later, with the devastating news bringing further grief for this mother still enduring such sorrow…the death of her third son.

Private 17209, Walter Davis Souls…Aged 24…of the 5th Brigade Machine Gun Corps (Infantry) Died from wounds in Rouen on 2nd August 1916…He is buried in the St Sever Cemetery, Rouen, France. |
