Lizzy
Yarnold – the District’s Double Olympic Champion -
Victory Parade |
|
Residents
can see double Winter Olympic Champion, Lizzy Yarnold, in person
on Wednesday 18 April 2018 on her victory bus tour of the Sevenoaks
District.
The tour will begin at Sevenoaks District Council offices at
9.30am, where the public can wave Lizzy off, and there will
be a half hour stop off at Swanley High Street at 11am. On route,
the bus will also pass through Otford, Eynsford and Horton Kirby
before finishing in West Kingsdown.
|
The
tour will include stops at several local schools as Lizzy is keen
to inspire a new generation of young athletes. Unfortunately,
the public will not be allowed into the grounds of the schools
included on the tour.
The full route and timings are available at www.sevenoaks.gov.uk/lizzyygold
Schools and community groups who want to congratulate Lizzy on
route should let the Council know by calling 01732 227000 or e-mailing
communities@sevenoaks.gov.uk
so the Council can arrange for the bus to slow down as it passes
them.
Live progress of the bus on the day of the tour will be posted
on the Council’s
twitter feed @sdc_newsdesk. The Victory bus tour is being
organised by Sevenoaks District Council in partnership with Go
Coach. |
Lizzy
made history on Saturday 17 February 2018 when she became the
first British athlete to successfully defend a Winter Olympic
title. The Skeleton sensation retained her Olympic Gold at the
Korean Winter Games in Pyeongchang after she won Gold at the
Sochi Winter Olympic Games in 2014.
Lizzy, who grew up in West Kingsdown in the Sevenoaks District,
was the only British athlete at this year’s Winter Olympics
to clinch a gold medal.
Lizzy is a talented all-round athlete who took up the Skeleton
after entering a talent search in 2009. It takes nerves of steel
to take part in this sport, as competitors slide down a frozen
track, lying face down on a sled, reaching speeds in excess
of 90 miles an hour, with no brakes!
When Lizzy first took up the Skeleton, the Sevenoaks District
Sport Council, funded by Sevenoaks District Council, awarded
her a grant to help with the transition to the new sport.
District Olympian, Lizzy Yarnold, says: “It still hasn’t
really sunk in that I am now a Double Olympic Champion! The
last four years has been tough and at times I wasn’t sure
if I would be able to defend my title, but it just shows if
you dream big and work hard then who knows what you can achieve.
Thanks to everyone in the Sevenoaks District for all their support.
I can’t wait to come and visit and show as many young
people as possible my two Olympic Gold Medals - dreams can come
true!”
Cllr Peter
Fleming, Leader of the Council, adds: “Lizzy’s hard
work, drive and sacrifice to become an Olympic champion is an
inspiration to us all. I am delighted that we were able to help
her early on in her career through our funding of the Sevenoaks
District Sports Council. I am deeply honoured that she has agreed
to once again tour the Sevenoaks District where she grew up
and spend time inspiring the next generation.”
The
route and timings are as follows
•
9.30am: Bus leaves Sevenoaks District Council offices heading
towards Trinity School via Pembroke Road, the A225 (past the
Vine), then right at Bat and Ball Junction and onto Seal Road
then right again onto Seal Hollow Road

Edenbridge
& District Twinning Association is welcoming their French
visitors for the weekend of Friday 12th to Sunday 14th May.
The French group is arriving late on the Friday evening, and
the following day there is an outing to Penshurst Place and
Church. That evening everyone is joining together for a meal
in Edenbridge WI Hall, and on the Sunday a farewell light brunch
is being held in Rickards Hall, with entertainment by Marlings
Morris.
A number
of French ‘twinners’ are expected and any help with
hosting would be much appreciated. The Association pays for
the activities for the French, courtesy of fund-raising events
and donations, so those hosting just need to provide bed, breakfast,
picnic and some drinks for their guests, and it doesn’t
matter if you can’t speak French.
Information
is on the website www.edta.org.uk
or please contact 01732 863226 by early April.

Racing “Hero” Sadly Dies! |
Sir John Surtees a well
known and respected “Hero” of Edenbridge, sadly
died on Friday March 10th at St George’s Hospital, London,
due to a respiratory condition which he had been suffering from,
he was 83 years old.
He was a favourite to all
who knew him in the town, he had a super following when he demonstrated
his car’s and motorcycles in the Town’s 2014 May
Day Parade...screaming engines, along Station Road through the
Town, with himself driving and his crew in and on Surtees own
cars and motorcycles.
|
|
He was, and is still the
only man living to have ever won a The Grand Prix “World
Championship” on two and four wheels…A superb achievement
for this young racer in his early days on the race tracks.
During his reign as a motorcycle
racer he won four 500cc titles in – 1956, 1958, 1959,
and 1960, also winning the Formula 1 Title in 1964 racing for
Ferrari. In his early days, from 1958 to 1960 he was 350cc and
the 500cc World Champion on two wheels.
John was awarded an MBE
in 1959, which was the same year as he won “Sports Personality
of the Year” a Tribute to a Great Racing Hero of the era!
In 2009, John was then awarded
the OBE, followed in 2016 with a CBE award
During his race career Surtees,
had the magic influence and determination, coupled with daring
speed to win his Most Honoured Titles on two and four wheels.
Between 1960 and 1972 he drove for Lotus, Honda, Cooper, Lola
and BRM – winning six F1 races with 111 starts.
In later year’s he
set up his own Formula 1 team when it made it’s first
showing in 1970 at the British Grand Prix at Brands Hatch…One
of his favourite circuits.
He also became Chairman
of the British Team in the latter years which was the A1 Grand
Prix Series, which has now been replaced.
His son Henry was competing
in the Formula 2 series when he was tragically killed at Brands
Hatch in 2009, only aged 18. John and his family went on to
remember their son, and to make it a lasting Memorial to his
Name with the - Henry Surtees Foundation - in aid of many who
are recovering from brain and bodily related injuries due to
motorsport accidents.
We Remember Sir John Surtees
as a remarkable man…and more his own life devoted to motor
sports, he was the life of Motor Racing in cars and motorcycles.
He remains the “Hero” of the British people….As
Still the only Man Winning Two World Campionships on Two and
Four Wheels….!!!

Plan Project – Edenbridge 2030 |
|
Support
for the Neighbourhood Plan vision of the future for Edenbridge
Comments
from people at the recent community engagement events 100% supported
the vision for the future of Edenbridge in the next 15 years.
Those who came to the drop-in sessions at the Eden Centre and
Rickards Hall agreed that they wanted a compact and balanced community,
connected in ways that encourage walking and cycling, and sympathetically
developed to enhance the environment, maintaining and improving
existing facilities.
They also
would like thriving attractive High Street in character with the
existing mix of historic architectural periods, continuing to
attract visitors as a tourism hub with improved facilities, and
to have retained and regenerated industrial areas, adapted for
changing economic trends and providing local employment.
Giant maps of Edenbridge and surrounding area gave people the
chance to pin flags with comments on aspects they liked, or on
matters about which they had concerns..........Click

Not
only has many parts of Britain seen and felt the damage to their

especially near the river and that immediate area was on the brink
of major flooding disaster, as residents near-by saw the river once

Edenbridge has a Community Warden
who provides a link between those who live and work here
and the organisations which serve the community, such
as the Town Council, Housing Associations, County and
District councils, and the Police. The role is funded
by a jig-saw of contributions from several authorities,
and two local charities - the John Coldman Trust and the
Great Stone Bridge Trust.
The Warden provides a useful
route for a two-way exchange of information, and is a
valuable extra pair of friendly eyes and ears when out
and about. He patrols round the parish, on foot and
in his distinctive vehicle, checking on issues which can
spoil the daily environment for local people, including
anti-social behaviour such as graffiti, litter, fly-tipping,
dog-fouling and vandalism - and arranging for them to
be dealt with as soon as possible.

Warden
