The
ancient church in the centre of the village, with old houses around
it is very picturesque. Nearby is Penshurst Place, a large medieval
manor house dating from 1341, one of England's finest Country
Houses, it is open to the public daily throughout the year. There
are many events held in the grounds in the summer from music concerts
to car rallies. You can visit the Toy Museum, which includes the
Yootha Rose Collection, memories of nurseries, dolls, dolls houses,
and toy soldiers.
There
is one garage in Penshurst which used to house the village blacksmith.
It now accommodates a post office and small shop where you can
purchase most day-to-day items.
There
are three local pubs, the Leicester Arms which also accommodates
visitors, is in the centre of the village. The others are on the
outskirts.Penshurst
also has its own vineyard which produces excellent white wine.
There is also a small primary school. The
village hall is the focal point for local clubs such as bridge
and keep fit. The parish council also has its meetings there. That's
Penshurst - blink and you'll miss it, look hard and there's lots
to see and enjoy!
