With the Christmas party-time in full swing, Kent Police are urging revellers to take care of themselves and safeguard their drinks.
Clubs and bars in Kent take a sensible approach to the misuse of drugs on their premises, but it is easy for a drink to be ‘spiked’ if it is left unattended - even a short time.
Drink spiking is the addition of any substance, including extra alcohol, to a drink without the drinker’s knowledge or consent.
Drinks are spiked for a number of reasons; for example, in order to commit a mugging, sexual assault or other crime, or even just for a joke. However, whatever the reason, drink spiking is a serious offence and carries a five-year custodial sentence.
Drinks don’t have to be alcoholic, tea coffee and soft drinks get spiked as well, and the drugs used are colourless and odourless.
Reports of drink spiking are extremely rare in Kent; however there is reason to believe that currently these incidents are not being reported to the police.
