A small percentage of drivers in Kent are still intent on risking their life and those of others by driving under the influence of alcohol.
Figures released today by Kent Police show that since the beginning of December officers across the county have carried out 6716 breath tests on drivers. Of those 323 drivers tested positive for alcohol – 4.8%. This compares to last year when 6325 drivers were tested in the county and of those 306 (also 4.8%) tested positive for alcohol.
During the month-long campaign, that included the Christmas and New Year period, ten people died in crashes in the county, five of these between 18 December 2004 and 2 January 2005.
Insp Geoff Wood said: “There is still a number of people who persist in risking lives by drinking and then getting behind the wheel.
“Although this campaign is over we are continuing with our efforts to make the county’s roads safer by running campaigns to ensure motorists do not use mobile phones when they are driving and that they and their passengers wear seatbelts.” |
