More than 800 arrests in blitz on burglary
A countywide operation to reduce household burglaries and deter and disrupt burglars has resulted in more than 800 arrests in Kent.
According to the results for Operation Castle, which ran between 1st November and New Year’s Eve 2004 officers made 831 arrests and managed to reduce burglary by 24%, which is a reduction from 1393 offences in Nov/Dec 2003 to 1060 in Nov/Dec 2004.
618 offences have been dealt with and a significant number of offenders were remanded in custody and therefore unable to commit any further crimes.
Officers working on Op Castle targeted known burglars with increased patrols and the use of covert investigation methods together with campaigns to encourage residents to take action to reduce the risk of being burgled.
In addition to the number of arrests and burglary offenders brought to justice, Operation Castle has also generated more than 500 intelligence reports and officers are following up enquiries that could lead to further arrests well into 2005.
This was the second time Operation Castle has been run and follows the successful initiative in February and March 2004.
Chief Constable Michael Fuller said: “Many burglars are known to police. Many are drug addicts who have a drug habit, and carry out burglaries to be able to feed that habit. What we’ve been very robust in doing is actually targeting them and we will continue to disrupt and deter their activities.”
Chief Supt Gary Beautridge said: “Kent is a safe place to live and these results show that we are working hard to keep it safe. Many of the offenders we have dealt with are now serving custodial sentences which means a significant proportion of ‘lifestyle’ criminals are now out of action, and will be so for some time.
“These results show that our effective use of intelligence and neighbourhood policing is having a significant impact in the fight against crime.”

Drink drive figures – positive result for West Kent
Drink drive figures released today by Kent Police show a smaller percentage of drivers in West Kent than last year have tested positive.
The figures show that since the beginning of December until 2 January 2005 a total of 965 tests were carried out across the area (compared to 743 last year - 222 more) and of these 26 were positive 2.7% (23 positive last year, 3.1%).
The results for the county this year were 6716 tests carried out and of these 4.8% were positive.
Insp Simon Wilshaw said: “The majority of drivers in West Kent act responsibly and are to be commended. It is pleasing to note that despite more tests being carried out a smaller percentage than last year have been positive. Clearly the right message is being received and understood by most people therefore it is difficult to understand why there are still people, who despite all the warnings, still choose to risk the lives of others by drinking and driving.”
