Police in West Kent have released a computer generated image of a man they would like to talk to in connection with a number of suspicious incidents that have happened across the area in the past few months.
A man matching this description called on elderly people using a number of different stories but usually saying he was a new neighbour or had been sent by a neighbour to do fencing, tree cutting or other garden maintenance and asking for payment for the work. On at least four occasions he was successful in either having money given to him or householders discovering money missing after he had gone.
The man is described as: white, 40 – 60 years old, 5ft 10in – 6ft, stocky build, he is usually smartly dressed and always wears a hat.
The man is believed to be connected to at least 12 incidents that have happened since November 2005 and February 2006 in Tonbridge, Tunbridge Wells, Wrotham, Plaxtol, Matfield and Lamberhurst.
Police advice regarding callers is STOP, CHAIN, CHECK. Use the door bar or chain before you open the door. Always ask to see identification, if you have any doubts about a caller or are not expecting anyone do not let them in, even if they say they know you.
Be very wary of anyone offering to do gardening or other household work, certainly do not hand over cash to anyone before work has been completed.
Crime reduction officers urge people to consider joining the Nominated Neighbour scheme designed to offer vulnerable people protection and reduce the number of victims of bogus caller crime. Details about the scheme are available from Leila Hughes, West Kent Police Neighbourhood Watch Liaison, tel 01892 502159, any local area Neighbourhood Watch scheme co-ordinator or Rural Warden.
Anyone with any information about the identity of the man is asked to call police in West Kent on 01732 379217 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Callers to Crimestoppers do not have to leave their name.
