Tree-cycle this Christmas
Residents dreaming of a green Christmas can have their Christmas trees collected then shredded to become environmentally friendly compost through Sevenoaks District Council's garden waste collection scheme.
By leaving their trees at their kerbside after the festive season, local people can take advantage of this free holiday service until the end of January.
Residents who have trees with a trunk less than 50mm (2" in diameter) should put their trees out the night before the scheduled fortnightly garden waste collection day in their road. Trees should not be decorated or be in pots or stands.
Residents who are unsure when their green waste collection day is should call Sevenoaks District Council's Contact Centre on 01732 227000.
Trees with a trunk more than 50mm (2" in diameter) are not suitable for the green waste collection service. However, they can be taken to Kent County Council's Dunbrik Household Recycling site at Sundridge, or to its Pedham Place site at Swanley where they can be placed in a large garden waste container to later be composted. Residents are advised to check opening times over the Christmas and New Year by calling Kent County Council's contact centre on 0845 3450210.
Cllr Avril Hunter, Sevenoaks District Council's Cabinet Member with responsibility for the Environment, says: "Christmas is a great time to make the most of the District's recycling initiatives, with all the wrapping paper and other recyclable materials that are generated. Trees are no different and the green waste collection scheme is a quick and easy way of turning them into environmentally friendly compost."
Residents are advised that the Council will not collect Christmas trees with their regular, weekly kerbside rubbish.
