New direction for highways
Local people will soon be able to report highways problems and have all their highways questions answered in one place when Kent Highways Services, a part of Kent County Council, takes overall responsibility for the service.
From 1 April 2005, residents should call Kent County Council’s contact centre on 08458 247 800 for all highways issues.
At present, highways responsibility is split between local district councils and Kent County Council. The Sevenoaks District Highways Unit carries out most day-to-day road maintenance work, including street lighting, and puts in bids to Kent County Council for improvements, such as resurfacing roads and pavements. Kent County Council sets Kent’s overall highways priorities, carries out major technical projects and funds all highways works.
Following a review last year, Kent County Council decided that if only one authority provided the service, it could be made more efficient and easier for residents to understand. As part of the new arrangements Kent County Council will set up three divisional offices for Kent, including one in West Kent with responsibility for Sevenoaks District.
Sevenoaks District Council will still continue to have an active involvement in highways decisions through the Joint Transportation Board, a Committee made up of District and County Councillors. The Board operates at a strategic level to help the County Council decide its local priorities.
Kent County Council has also set up the Kent Transport Board, which brings together councillors from Kent County Council, district and town and parish councils together with other central Government bodies to discuss transport issues affecting the area.
