Edenbridge residents lead the way
Edenbridge residents who want to get fitter in 2006 can take part in free weekly health walks led by trained local people.
The popular Edenbridge Health Walk scheme, co-ordinated by Sevenoaks District Council and South West Kent Primary Care Trust was launched in November 2004. It has been so successful that last month 15 Edenbridge residents joined people from across the District to attend a ‘Walk Leader’ training course to allow them to lead the health walks themselves.
The Edenbridge Health Walk meets at 9.15am every Wednesday outside the main entrance of Edenbridge Leisure Centre, Stangrove Park ready for a 9.30am start.
The walk takes approximately 45 minutes, all ages and abilities are welcome and everyone is encouraged to walk at their own pace. No special equipment is needed, just comfortable walking shoes.
As an incentive, regular walkers will be issued with a ‘walking passport’ to record the number of walks they have attended and will be rewarded with free gifts.
The walks will finish at the Bridges Centre on the High Street for refreshments. Walks are suitable for anyone, including those with pushchairs or wheelchairs.
Cllr Felicity Broomby, Sevenoaks District Council’s Cabinet Member with responsibility for health issues, says: “It is wonderful that so many people attended the training course and can now help others lead a more active lifestyle. The walks are a great way to get fit and meet new people along the way, anyone is welcome and they are completely free!”
Angela Painter, Sevenoaks Locality Manager for South West Kent Primary Care Trust, adds: "This is an excellent initiative which has really helped to promote the health and wellbeing of the people of Edenbridge."
