You can do it!
Sevenoaks District residents have already shown that they are some of the most environmentally friendly people about and now they can make 2006 an even greener year by helping their pets recycle!
Over the festive period many people will have been given a cat or dog as a pet, and this of course means buying pet food. Most pet food comes in a can but what can be done with the can once it is empty?
The quickest and easiest way to dispose of any empty can is to ensure it is cleaned and any lids are tucked safely inside the can, and then placed into one of Sevenoaks District Council’s clear recycling sacks.
The clear sacks are then taken to a high-tech sorting facility in Essex where they are removed and sent to larger reprocessors for the manufacture of new products: steel and aluminium to can makers, plastic bottles to plastic products makers, and card and paper to paper manufacturers.
Cllr Felicity Broomby, the Council’s Cabinet member with responsibility for recycling, says: “There is always a great opportunity to make the most of the Council’s recycling initiatives at this time of the year when residents have new pets, as a lot of recyclable materials are generated. Residents can put their empty pet food tins in the clear sacks to be recycled and keep up the excellent work they do for the environment.”
Steel cans account for three out of four of the total 17 billion cans produced every year in the UK, including cans for food, drinks and pet food. In 2003, 2.5 billion steel cans were recycled – however another 9 billion were not.
If you have used your 25 clear sacks over the Christmas period you can collect more free of charge from Council offices, or a full roll of 25 sacks can be brought from any one of a variety outlets across the District for only 50p.
