Press Release - July 2006

Get ready for a fun packed summer in the zone!

Over 20 towns and villages across the District look set for a summer full of entertainment as the Youth Zone returns to bring free fun filled activities for children and young people.

With the summer holidays nearly here, Sevenoaks District Council's In the Zone Summer Programme is set to provide fun and games for young people of all ages. All activities are free of charge, with face painting and circus tricks proving to be some of the most popular last year. This year there are events for everybody including sculpture workshops, t-shirt and hat designing, a tropical beach party and even a teddy-bears picnic.

The Youth Zone's first stop will be Greatness Recreation Ground, Mill Lane, in Sevenoaks for an R 'n' B and hip-hop dance workshop run by the EZ STEPZ dance team on Monday 31 July as part of the peforming arts week.

Activities will run from 11am to 3.30pm each day, weather permitting, without the need to book in advance as activities are run on a turn up and join in basis. Young people are registered when they arrive and leave the site, although under eights must be accompanied and supervised by a parent or carer at all times. Please bring a packed lunch if you would like to stay for the day.

Cllr Felicity Broomby, Cabinet Member with responsibility for young people's issues, says: "With such a variety of games and activities there's always something to do so children and young people won't be bored and best of all it's completely free! Last year some 1,300 children and young people joined in and had an action-packed  summer holiday. Make sure that you don't miss out in 2006!"

This year the Youth Zone Team has got new equipment, new ideas and even more staff, so more children and young people can join in the fun.

The dates and details of the In the Zone Summer Programme and other exciting summer activities can be found by viewing the young people's pages on the Council's website www.sevenoaks.gov.uk/youngpeople or by calling the Council on 01732 227000.

Alternatively, pick up one of the yellow leaflets that have been distributed to schools, parish councils, youth groups, libraries and leisure centres across the District.

For more information about the In the Zone Summer Programme, contact Sophie Lord, the Council's Youth Development Co-ordinator, on 01732 227492 or e-mail sophie.lord@sevenoaks.gov.uk
