Edenbridge residents have proved they can get themselves into shape thanks to a free weekly course that offers nutritional advice for people of all ages.
The Shape Up Weight Management Programme provides expert advice on how healthier food choices can make lasting changes to both diet and lifestyle.
At the weekly meetings, held every Thursday morning at Edenbridge Leisure Centre, there is a private weigh in, a talk from a dietician and a question and answer session, as well as practical written information for each member of the group to take away.
There is no age barrier to those who can succeed as Dorothy Wood from Marsh Green has proved.
The 81-year old has lost almost three stone since joining the Shape Up programme in March this year, dropping from 13 to nearly ten stone.
Mrs Wood, says: “Before I started the course I was eating lots of bread, cheese, chocolates, biscuits and cakes. But following the advice I was given I now eat lots more salads and fruits, and for dinner it is usually fresh meat and vegetables.”
Cllr Felicity Broomby, Sevenoaks District Council member with responsibility for healthy living, adds: “It is amazing how simple and often small changes to your daily lifestyle and the food you eat can make a significant difference to your health and general wellbeing. The Shape Up programme is an excellent opportunity to learn how you can make these changes with free advice from experts on the subject. I would urge anyone who is interested to go along.”
Shape Up is part of the Healthy Edenbridge Network, a joint initiative involving Sevenoaks District Council to improve the health and wellbeing of people who live in the town. It is run by expert dieticians from the Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead.
