| It was Reg Marchant's, 65th birthday party on Saturday evening, many attended not only to celebrate their friends big-day, but to donate money to assist him in his own efforts to accomplish his planned “Trip of a Lifetime” next year.
Family and friends came together showing support for the trip, and with great delight handed over envelopes of cash and cheques to Brenda his wife, all the money donated so far gives Reg a greater opportunity to get the plans for his trip well under way.
Friends also donated a wonderful amount of gifts, which were all to be used in a raffle held later in the evening, bottles of drink, boxes of chocolates, perfume, flowers, make-up, jewellery, and a superb framed photograph that Reg took himself, as he is an excellent photographer.
He will also be taking images of his trip along the way, these will be used to design a calendar to sell, and to raise funds for the British polio fellowship.
As the party got under way Reg gave a speech and thanked heartily all those who turned up and gave donations of money and items for the raffle.
This marked a very special occasion not only for Reg and Brenda, but for all his family and friends present, their admiration for this “local hero” and his every effort to fulfil his ambition was evident by the round of applause and cheers that everyone gave him.
The evening went spectacularly well for all those who came, the music played and many got up to dance and have fun together, as the raffle took place, cheers were heard all around the hall as the lucky winners came up to receive their prizes.
It was certainly an exceptional evening, it gave Reg a great boost as the money donated by his most generous and dear friends present and those who could not make it, a fantastic sum for the party of £1,800, would help him move ahead with the trip, soon to take place in April, next year.
Reg will start his trip from the Lifeboat station at the R.N.L.I. Headquarters at Poole in Dorset, in April, 2010.
The trip that he will endeavour to accomplish will take him to as many Lifeboat Stations as possible around the coast of Britain, this in itself is a tremendous feat of stamina and endurance, but Reg struck down with polio since a young boy, has been all the more determined to see this through to the end, hoping to get enough sponsorship to cover this massive long distance trip which will be over 5, 500 miles.
This will not be an easy quest for Reg by any sense of the imagination, as he will be travelling around the coast in a specially designed, heavy-duty mobility scooter, strong enough to encounter the steep hills and bumpy roads along the way.
Not only has he to contend with sitting in his scooter every day for hours on end, but his machine will only go at a top speed of about 8 mph, and his planned hopes are to cover at least 30 miles a day, this in itself will take all of Reg's strength and stamina to accomplish.
Reg Marchant, is certainly one of the “Local Hero's” of Edenbridge and of the County of Kent, every penny or pound that anyone can donate, will without doubt give Reg the chance to fulfil his dream, on this, his own planned “Trip of a Lifetime”
