| Local man Reg Marchant is preparing to embark on a lifetime adventure on his mobility scooter, this epic journey will take him on a 5, 500 mile trip around the coast of Britain, all in aid of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution and the British Polio Fellowship.
Reg who suffers from post polio syndrome, caught when he was a young boy, is determined not to sit back and take it easy when his retirement is due next year in 2010.
With his 65th birthday coming up he plans to use his time in an excellent effort to raise money for these two most worthy causes.
He plans to visit as many lifeboat stations on his journey as he can when travelling along the coast of England, this will be a gruelling, tough and strenuous 6 month trip for Reg when he start off in April next year. He begins his epic journey at the R.N.L.I. Headquarters at Poole in Dorset.
This mammoth journey requires a heavy-duty scooter that is capable of standing up to the rigours of the roads, and that can also face the many steep hills along the route, a mechanic will also be needed as a very essential member of the group who can attend to any problems that the scooter might encounter.
During this remarkable adventure Reg will also need some strong hands and willing volunteers, both men and women who can accompany him for the duration of the trip for a three to six month period, as well as a four to six berth caravan with a truck or van to tow it, that he and the crew can rest and sleep in as the journey progresses around the coast.
Reg is hoping that many sponsors will come forward and support his very worthy causes in raising enough funds to get this project off the ground and add as much money as possible to benefit the R.N.L.I. and the B.P.F, he being a keen amateur photographer will be taking photographs along the route of his journey, these will be also used to raise funds for the two memorable causes.
He has already been collecting money, and some fund raising activities are being planned, the money to support his worthy trip is already coming in, but more is needed.
Reg is determined to face this challenge with confidence and bravery, for he will spend long tiring hours on the scooter travelling at a top speed of...8m.p.h. and hopes to cover 30 miles a day.
He will also have to face the differing weather conditions that will confront him, whether rain or shine, Reg is confident that this won’t deter his ambition to complete this exceptional trip of 5, 500 miles for the magnificent causes he is working hard towards fulfilling.
This will be without doubt a supreme effort by Reg, and he hopes that many will step forward and support this epic and remarkable journey of a lifetime...and donate money for his great and worthy causes...the R.N.L.I and the British Polio Fellowship.....!!!
