Long gone are the days in the 1970's when skateboards was the worlds biggest craze, millions of youngsters continued to fly high on ramps built of old wooden pallets, scaffold boards, concrete blocks, or “whatever they could find” to give them a lift off the ground in this new and wonderful exciting sport.
In London, the South-bank was a favourite place to go at the weekends where many hundreds of youngsters congregated with all the enthusiasm of trying out their own special skills, with dangerous but exciting new tricks on this delicate but very difficult machine to handle...a strange fibre glass or wooden board on wheels!
But those days have since long gone for many, but the youth of today are beginning to revive the lost sport, as it is now growing in popularity across the country.
In Edenbridge, the youngsters of the town and surrounding areas, have for a long time wanted a skate park in the town to develop their skills and enjoy this form of thrilling pleasure.
Their dream may soon come to reality, as the local Edenbridge Town Council have given their approval for a new site to be installed at Blossoms Park.
Despite local opposition, the council have decided in favour of the youngsters to give them the opportunity to enjoy their recreation on skateboards in the town.
With the prospect of the ramp for skateboarders hopefully being in place and ready to use by the end of the summer, those who enjoy and practise this are extremely excited at the coming prospects that this will bring.
Local resident Jo Thexton, a youth worker in the town, is in full agreement to give the youngsters what they need.
With the support of Jo and many other residents in the community, the need to give the youngsters of the town a venue where they can practise their skills, is a tribute to their determination, and to the youngsters who need and want a place to enjoy the sport of skateboarding to their pleasure and enjoyment.
