The residents of the Fairtrade Town of Edenbridge will be celebrating Fairtrade Fortnight this year by putting their best feet forward in the cause of Fairtrade in the schools, businesses, organisations and churches. This will be most visible in the town on Saturday 3rd March as families take their Fairtrade Footsteps passport and follow a Fairtrade Trail (between 10am and 2pm) round the town, visiting all sorts of fascinating places, trying out different things, pausing for a drink or nibble from time to time and collecting the all important stickers which at the end will entitle them to some Fairtrade chocolate (generously donated by the Co-op). They are likely at some point to meet a six foot gorilla, maybe accompanied by a giant banana.
Meanwhile, a Fairtrade Trade Fair (from 10am to 12 noon) will be in full swing behind the museum in the precinct and in Rickards Hall , with lots of things to try, beautiful (or delicious) things to buy, interesting things to look at (including the wonderful Fairtrade bunting made by the town’s children) and music to listen to. Fairtrade Trail Passports will be picked up here.
Also during Fairtrade Fortnight don’t miss the excellent Fairtrade Specials available at various venues including: BRIDGES, Self Unlimited, Sencio (Leisure Centre), and The Old Eden.
And why is all this happening?
..... because the town cares about fairness. Edenbridge became the first Fairtrade Town in Kent in 2005. This means that many organisations and businesses in Edenbridge think that trading fairly is important and so have committed themselves to stocking, selling or using fairly traded products. Organisations involved in this initiative include The Town Council, local businesses, shops, pubs, schools, churches, and leisure organisations.
What is Fairtrade?
• Trade that is fair
• Trade that doesn’t exploit adults or children
• Trade that guarantees a reasonable price
• Trade that reduces poverty
• Trade that invests a share of profits into community health or education
