The
annual Edenbridge Fun Day
takes place on Bank Holiday Monday
May 27th, as part of the Eden Valley Summer Festival.
There will be something for everyone, with events throughout the
High Street and on Lingfield Road Recreation Ground.
This year’s theme is Alice in
Wonderland, with Alice-themed artworks, interactive
events and a fancy dress competition
for all ages. The Alice in Wonderland
Adventure offers children a trip down the rabbit
hole into a magical place with fun mirrors and pink flamingos, culminating
in a Mad Hatters tea party
for the youngsters. The Art in Wonderland
event will invite young and old to create a Mad
Hatter mural with the Eden Valley Artists. The more
adventurous can have a go at throwing a pot on the potter’s
wheel, and there will also be a colouring competition
for the under-11’s. The Alice
in Wonderland wall will display scenes created by
local artists, plus a magic forest painted by children from Edenbridge
Primary School. Shop windows will display ‘Bees
in Alice’s Wonderland’ –
children’s art using recycled materials, organised by the
Sustainable Edenbridge group to highlight the decline in bee populations.
Can you find the hidden bee in each artwork? |
The day will start at 10am with a peal of bells from
the Parish Church. There will be lots of street entertainment throughout
the day from EdenbridgeTown Band,
Forge Singers, Marlings Morris clog dancers, and
Bands on the Run (a
fabulous live music showcase for under-18’s bands).
The popular Fun Day Market
is back again with food, crafts, and other local produce to browse
and buy. Many of the local shops
will be open, and local cafes
and street stalls will offer a variety of
food and drink, snacks, lunches, teas and
treats throughout the day. The Fun
Day Land Train will connect the events, offering
both young and old a fun way of taking in all the attractions along
the High Street without walking!
The Pram
Races (with decorated ‘prams’ pushed
by teams in fancy dress) have 3 categories: the junior teams will
race their prams and complete games in the High Street; the Youth
and Adult teams will race their prams along a route of pubs, drinking
half pints of beer/soft drink along the route! |
The
excitement will build further as the Classic
Vehicle Pageant takes to the streets in the
afternoon (with classic cars, motorbikes and scooters from the last
100 years). In pole position will be 2 Formula One racing cars from
the collection of racing legend and
local businessman John Surtees. The pageant will
move through the High Street and onto a static display on the Lingfield
Road Recreation Ground - where there will also be a Model
Aircraft Flying Display and a static display of
model aircraft by the Croydon Model Aircraft Club, together with
a Beer Festival hosted
by the Rugby Club. The racing cars will return to a static display
outside Bradfords Electrical. |

Finally
the whole great day will be topped off by a
free evening concert on the Lingfield Road
Recreation Ground with well-known professional Jazz-Funk
band Protect the Beat from 7pm to 10pm. There will
be a ‘bucket collection’ in aid of Chamber of Commerce
Charities (the Henry Surtees Foundation, Edenbridge Hospital League
of Friends, and Eden Valley Museum).
This will be great day for everyone,
with something for everyone to enjoy and take part in.
Fun Day and Festival events are listed in Essentially
Edenbridge magazine, and can also be found on www.edenvalleyfestival.org.uk
and www.edenvalleychamber.org.uk.
There is still time
to join the pram
race or car
pageant, or take a stall at the Fun Day market - application
forms are available on either website. |
