How the Edenbridge Bonfire Show Started...1928

Do you recognise any of these people from your family who started the Edenbridge bonfire in 1928...?

Mr W.C. Muggeridge, Mr Arthur Cheal (Chairman),
Mr T.A. Cowdry, Mr & Mrs Bert Thompsett,
Mr “Copper” Charlton, Mr Cyril Boyland,
Mr & Mrs Wickes, Mr Jacobs, Mr Fred Warner.

The first bonfire night was held at Crouch House Farm, such was the commitees enthusiasm for this event that over 700 local residents and their families turned-up! The firework collection raised from just Crouch House Road...and Not the town...
was an incredible amount of £1 . 5/-...!!!

The procession went from Crouch House Farm to the bottom of Stangrove road.
It was a great night and all the committee and those active in its participation on the floats and holding torches was all overwhelmed by its success! Hence the Edenbridge Bonfire Night continued every year (except during WW2) but was soon in action again after the war, and ever since.

Edenbridge Bonfire Night....1930

This photo taken on the evening of 5th November 1930, and is one of the earliest to be taken. It shows a group of happy local people young and older ones enjoying the evening with torches and dressed-up for the event during the procession and tableau’s that took part.

Do You recognise any of your family in the photo...?

Edenbridge Bonfire Night...1931

This was another great year for the Edenbridge Bonfire, the Commitee certainly put on an excellent display as you can see from the crowds that gathered to see the procession and the bonfire itself.
I am not sure if the band playing is The Edenbridge Town Band, but it probably was. As for the fantastic amount of people who were there certainly show that even as long ago as that the local residents and those who could travel by train and coach were coming to see this fantastic event!

Do You recognise any of your family in the photograph?
